It's All In The Details

Our artistic fine furniture is hand-crafted one table, one cabinet, one work of art at a time.

Signature craftsmanship of Mokuzai Furniture features visible joinery to show off the beautiful construction.

We think furniture should be built well and if it is, then why not show it off.

All of our furniture, from our narrow side tables, hall tables and console tables, to our artistic display cabinets, media consoles and dressers, features the unique details of our Signature Visible Joinery.  In many of the pieces we leave the clever construction of our modern wood furniture visible so that you can see the fine craftsmanship of our work. Each piece will feature hand-cut joinery that is designed for strength and heirloom quality and often also adds an artistic highlight.

Using machine and hand tools, our solid wood furniture features beautiful craftsmanship and heirloom quality

Merging modern living style with lasting tradition, the quality and artistic craftsmanship of each piece of our modern wood furniture is stunning.

Our modern wood furniture isn't made in a factory or on an assembly line.  Using a combination of machine and traditional hand tools, our narrow tables and artistic cabinets are made individually, by our hands with a little heart and soul.  The final edges of a piece are shaped by hand.  A machine can create an accurate, sharply defined edge, but we prefer the artistic detail of hand-shaped edges.  Sometimes you can even feel the tiny ridges and angles created by the hand plane blade that make up the final edge of a piece.

Signature Visible Joinery of our modern wood furniture, Here hand cut dovetails are fitted together for a strong and lasting connection

We take pride in a well-cut dovetail, the perfectly imperfect hand-shaped curved, a clever new interlocking joint.

Those details are what sets us apart.  Our narrow console tables, unique bar cabinets, and artistic storage solutions are all original designs.  We have created a collection of artistic furniture with high functionality and our style is our own.  These details are our signature.  Generations from now, when someone sees one of our pieces they will notice the interesting curves, the unique construction, or the visible joinery and say, that's Mokuzai Furniture.

A hand-cut butterfly key is inlaid to lock the connection of the two boards.

When you order a piece of Mokuzai Furniture, you are ordering a one-of-a-kind, artistic piece of fine furniture.

Your table is carefully planned from the rough slabs of lumber to the last coat of finish.  Peyton is extremely specific about the use and placement of the wood grain patterns throughout each piece.  Most people wouldn't notice at first, but if you look closely at a finished table, the mirroring, matching and flow of the beautiful patterns over the piece really take each table to another level of fine artistry.  Our original composition methods create heirloom quality works of art.  Rather than just cutting and gluing a bunch of pieces together, Mokuzai Furniture comes together with a unique series of interlocking joinery, careful dowel work and clever construction techniques.  Throughout the production process of each piece of Mokuzai Furniture, we document the creation with a collection of photographs from our workshop.  We pass these along to you, so you too can see the story and detail that makes your new furniture so special.

The Mokuzai workshop- where we create or solid wood furniture

The process is not fast.  There are two of us, four hands, creating each and every part of Mokuzai.

We built our own workshop.  We build many of our own tools.  We carefully select just the right lumber.  We individually create each piece of our furniture by hand.  There is no large stack of legs or table tops or pre-cut pieces ready for assembly.  Each table and cabinet receive the same attention to design and detail.  No edge is left undone, no corner unfinished.  We do our own photography, build our own website, and design our own catalog.  We build each custom crate and carefully prepare, wrap and pack each piece of furniture for shipping.  There are no rush orders available, no quick ship options.  When you order a piece of Mokuzai Furniture you will have to wait but we hope, when you unwrap your new table, the breathtakingly beautiful display of nature and artistic expression you find will be well worth the wait.
